  • Containers or plastic bags to store food in.
  • Kitchen scissors or sharp knife to cut large pieces of meat.
  • Vinegar to clean up area (no need to use bleach, it can be harmful to your pet).
Raw food sources  Let the source be with you  Join a raw food co-op for getting the best deals on raw meat and bone in your area.
Yahoo groups is a good place to start.

There are two in central Florida that I recommend belong to:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/raw4pets/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CentralFLRawFoodCo-op

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/

I do not run or operate any of the groups mentioned, but I do belong to them.  You will get more ongoing useful and practical information there than all the books combined.

Join a few groups and read through the archives for more information.

Another source of raw foods can be a local butcher or ethnic grocery store, your warehouse clubs (Sams, Costco) or local grocery stores specials.

Meat distributors/restaurant supply stores can be a great source of raw foods.

Home setup  Location, location, location Where you feed should be an area that is easy to clean up, and one where the dogs feel at ease.   Crates are often used to eliminate any arguments over their new delicious meals.

Use an old sheet, or a tablecloth that can be easily washed after meals to keep the area clean.

Some prefer to feed outdoors, and dirt will not affect the food, but be prepared to clean up the dog afterwards.

You know your pets best, do what you find easiest for them and you.  If your dog is prone to dragging off a piece of meat, a crate may be your best option.   After several years of feeding raw my dogs eat out of bowls and rarely drop even a piece of meat on the floor!
Actually feeding your dog What kind of meat/foods should I feed? Start with the basics, chicken, beef, pork.  The majority of raw feeders use chicken as the base of the majority of the meals.  Of course any meat or fish protein will work, whatever is easily available and affordable.  I prefer to feed chicken, you may prefer kangaroo!  Add other meats to keep a bit of variety in the diet, but don't go overboard!

DO NOT GIVE YOUR DOGS COOKED BONES!
Don't COOK your dog's food.  Don't microwave meat and bones.  If the food is cold warm it in a bowl of warm water.   Most dogs prefer 'warmed food.'

What about other foods? Dogs (and cats) do not have the digestive system to cope with grains.  Grains are one of the leading causes of allergies in dogs and is the main ingredient in dog kibble.  Many people find when they switch their pets to an all natural diet, allergies disappear.
How much do I feed? 2% of your dogs IDEAL weight OR
based on their activity level
Since raw foods are the most beneficial for our pets, you will find you can feed LESS and your dog will stay in shape.  Rule of thumb:  for every cup of dry kibble you would have fed, I would replace it with 2 ounces of raw meat and bones.

Most pets will LOSE some weight when switched to raw and are healthier and leaner!
What to feed SMALL dogs or cats? small pets small bones? Even small dogs and cats can eat RAW bones easily.
What to watch for "Poop patrol" When you transition from 'kibble to raw' you will/should notice a change in your pet's fecal matter.  Knowing what to expect will ease your mind.
